So I am sure that those of you really know me did not have to question whether or not I awoke to watch The Royal Wedding.... I DID! In fact I awoke an hour earlier than I anticipated needing too. I loved it... I loved every single minute of it. However once it was over and done with I wish it really would have been OVER AND DONE WITH. I did not need to flip through it on replay ALL day long.
As my sister-in-law Darrah and I shopped for our gazillion snacks we thought we would need to keep us excited for the event, the girl at the cash register was dumbfounded that 1. we were getting up to watch the event and 2. that we were spending money on that many snacks for it. She went on to talk about the ridiculousness of CELEBRITY and that they should not get all that they have and hardly have to work for it. While walking out we felt like we had just been judged and berated by a teenager.
Now I have been known to be a bit of a CELEBRITY NUTZO... lets just say I can NEVER live in LA because my mind could not take all the proximity to big stars. However the Royals are way more than just celebrity. They are a staple... a TRADITION. The Royal families have been ruling Europe for centuries. They are not some Britney Spears who released a pop song and proceeded to crash into drugs. They are not even some Kate Winslet who is an acclaimed actress and won many awards but is just one actress living her life. They are Centuries and Centuries of TRADITION and FAMILY.
You cannot just simply become a royal like it is so easy to become famous... just be rich or get on a "reality tv show" I am still trying to figure out why the Kardashians are celebrities. You must marry into the Royal family or be born to it. This is the most exclusive club there is. Not to mention that although I know they are more of a figurehead than actual decision maker... what they do shapes history.
America would not have been founded had it not been for the taxes the British monarchy was imposing on people. We in America had the opportunity to establish our own royalty but opted not to.
Even more than their tradition... this is LIVING HISTORY. History was always my favorite subject and I love history movies, books, documentaries. This is the kind of History that you tell your children about. These are memories that last with your forever.
I guess as far as I can remember the fascination with British Royalty began for me, with my mother. I remember her telling me about how she woke up early in the morning to watch Princess Di and Prince Charles wed. I remember listening to her in the early hours of August 31 as she called her parents to tell them that Princess Diana had passed away, them too up watching the news. I remember eating with my brothers, mom, and grandparents at an AppleBee's in Brentwood, TN the next day and knowing that something horribly sad had happened and this was an event that would change the world.
I guess I may be taking this all a bit seriously because at the heart of it, it is simply a love story. And that is the other fasination... this was just a boy at college who fell in love with a girl and 8 years later after has married. Just a boy who one day will rule a country and a country girl who will support him and love him. This is the ultimate Love Story. Coming from a horrendous broken marriage of his parents to picking the perfect mate. For her the sacrifice of a normal life to live with envasion of peering eyes and having every moment exposed to spend the rest of her life with her soulmate.
But also not to mention the fashion of the event.
I especially appreciated the classiness of the dress... no sleezy dresses with spaghetti straps, strapless, to short short, or major cleavage. Everyone was elegantly dressed and properly covered. I think we could take a major hint from that and bring it back to the US... as well as the hats!
I do not regret one single minute of waking up at 4 am to watch history in the making. One day I will tell my own daughter what I was doing the day Prince William wed his Princess Catherine, just as my mom has told me about his parents wedding.
1. Peyton watching as the Prince's were driving in their Rolls Royce to the Chapel
2. She was as captivated as all of us when Catherine got out of the car and revealed her dress.
3. A little bored with all the ceremonial stuff
4. Waving to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they left the chapel in their carriage.
Mom even got up to watch.
Darrah was enchanted by the event as well... she too remembers watching Princess Diana and Prince Charles wed.
Followed up the viewing party with a big ole nap!
